Las’stul’sa’las (Ned Matilpi) was born in ‘Ya̱lis (Alert Bay), 1957 into the Ma’a̱mtagila. He is also Tłingit of his grandmother’s side, who is from Tsax̱is (Fort Rupert). Ned started carving 30 years ago through the Thunderbird Park system with his late father Oscar Matilpi. He learned to carve poles and masks, and from 1978 he studied bentwood box making and flat design with Pa̱lnukwa̱la Wakas (Doug Cranmer) for 3 years. Ned has worked with the late Jimmy John and the late Jake James making masks and had the pleasure of working with ‘Malidi (Bruce Alfred), Harold Alfred and was inspired for years by his friend ‘Walas G̱wa̱ʼya̱m (Beau Dick).
He has been making panels, poles, bentwood boxes in the last five years and is currently concentrating on carving masks in a refined approach. One of his poles is located in downtown Duncan.
